Government is YOU: Americo Diaz for Congress in 2012

Last year, the Democrats suffered a massive blow to their collective egos and the country has yet to witness the full extent of the incoming Republican blitzkrieg.

But if there’s a single lesson the Democrats should have learned, it’s that we’re just about done with the usual crop of so-called leaders, career-politicians whose ambitions exceed their empathy.  Their inability – or unwillingness – to connect with the public they’re supposed to represent is a failure on their part and reflects poorly on what is supposed to be OUR government.

By the people, for the people, that sort of thing.

Inspired by the wave of ordinary Americans who had launched campaigns and won seats in the House and in the Senate, my friend Americo Diaz told me he planned to run for Congress.  More to the point, he had set his sights on nothing less than the seat currently held by Nancy Pelosi, arguably one of the most powerful Democrats in the game. Now I’m a cynical man by nature, to say the very least. I’m also a registered Green.  Let’s just say I had my reservations…

But Americo was adamant.  He kept talking about how much he wanted people of all stripes to join in his campaign. I’ve seen follow through on that wish, watching him engage with people he’d never met, getting a feel for their ideas and expectations. He’s an unabashed progressive voice with an understanding for the needs of the working poor and diminishing middle class; needless to say he encountered differing points of view during his chats.
But the one thing people recognize right away is when a leader is willing to work for YOU, not some crony or corporate entity.

I’ve known Americo Diaz for almost a decade, since the days of figure-drawing classes at the California College of the Arts. I know him as one of the most honest and decent guys I’ve ever met.  I also know that aside from my parents, I’d never met anyone who worked harder than this guy; at CCA, I saw him spend sleepless nights on any given architecture project, holding fast and steady through a rigorous curriculum that made others cry, give up, throw in the towel.  I’ve seen him take on random goals such as becoming a bicycle racing champ, and actually accomplishing them.  Given what I know about Americo as a man, there’s nobody else I’d rather have representing my district, working in the interests of the public.

I’m lending my support, my talents, and my time, because I believe that Americo knows a fundamental truth about our government: that it is PUBLIC SERVICE.

At this early stage in the game we’re seeking donations from a core group of friends and supporters. We’re asking for $5, $10, $100, whatever you can afford to give to get the ball rolling. But FIRST, I’m asking you to check out his facebook profile (his official page is currently under-construction).  See for yourself what I’ve been talking about all this time.  If you’re tired of calculating career politicians and faux-progressives like Pelosi who support wars of aggression, then join us.  Volunteer. Donate by check or cash. Or if you can do neither, please, PLEASE spread the word to everybody you know.

“Government is YOU”.
